TALKING FOOTBALL

2015-10-01 06:00

A FOOTBALLER’S job may look glamorous at a distance, however, it is one of the most difficult jobs. What people read in newspapers and watch on television is misleading.

Football is a complex sport and is very demanding on the individual. It is easier to pass a matric examination than a football trial in a big football club.

We encourage young footballers to focus on their studies. It is not only your “talent” that ensures success in football. Young players need to make lots of sacrifices if they are going to make it in this game. They have to sweat water and blood and it is critical that we embrace pain and accept failure as part of growth.

Fun, enjoyment and satisfaction should be the only reason one plays or coaches football. I think it is the same in any job. Personally, football is the only activity that gives me fulfilment. It is a job that you should be able to do for free. Currently, there are too many people who are in football mainly for money and glory.

I am very excited by the young coaching talent emerging from this part of the world. Our young coaches are working hard to improve their skills. I hope young Pietermaritzburg footballers take advantage of this development. Great players are a reflection of the quality of coaching in their neighbourhood.

Lastly, if you think football is a place to make easy money, you are in a wrong place. Playing or coaching football can be a lonely job. If you work hard, just like in any other job, the rewards are huge.

Academic challenges are easier compared to playing football professionally. Unzima lo mthwalo
