Thieves hit Manor homes

2015-04-30 16:42

MANOR residents say the area has become a hot spot for crime after two houses were broken into on the same night over the weekend.

One family was forced to cut their holiday short after thieves ransacked their home, stealing valuables.

Sunitha Sewpal and her family had been in Durban on holiday since Thursday, but returned home on Saturday evening, shortly after being told that their home in Mason Road had been broken into.

“About five men lifted our gate off the rails and then entered our home. They stole our TV and my jewellery, among other things,” she said.

It is believed that neighbours, alerted by the blaring alarm, called the police and private security guards, after which the men fled in a blue BMW with the valuables.

The family was counting the cost of the robbery, and left the home untouched while waiting for fingerprinting to be done before taking steps to clean up. The police reported that another home, on the corner of Mason Road and Maple Street, which was also unoccupied at the time, was broken into on Saturday night.

The house was vacant as the owners were making renovations before moving in.

Police spokesperson Major Thulani Zwane said a case of housebreaking was opened, but no arrest has been made. Residents said the area has become the target of thieves
