Traffic circle - disaster waiting to happen

2015-07-30 06:00

EVERY afternoon I, like many other commuters, bear the laborious wait of peak-hour traffic.

The new traffic circle leading in and out of the Brookside Mall on Manning Avenue has proved the observations of many to be true.

The circumference of the dual-lane circle is simply not large enough to allow outbound traffic (going in the direction of Mountain Rise) to merge easily into the single lane of Manning Avenue and, in the absence of traffic officers, the impatience of drivers exacerbates the situation.

The problem arises at the intersection of Masukwana (East) Street and Manning Avenue, with infringing drivers crossing solid white lines, disrupting traffic turning from Masukwana Street into Manning Avenue.

As if this is not the height of intolerance, some drivers who turn left from Masukwana into Manning Avenue are not willing to queue in the lane yielding to the left - they choose to turn left around the traffic light. This is a clear traffic violation and is potentially dangerous to road users and pedestrians.

A speedy action plan from our municipal traffic authority regarding possible solutions to this problem would be appreciated.
