SEEING aspiring models being turned away just because they are not the ideal model size prompted a former model coach to start a company in a bid to give confidence to young girls and boys.

As we celebrate Youth Month, NOKULUNGA NGOBESE spoke to Nondumiso Ma’ani Hessari, who runs Evolve Training which focuses on youth development.

Born in Bisley 26 years ago Ma’ani Hessari left her job as a model coach to focus on youth development. Her job involves training young girls on image presentation, confidence building and etiquette and instilling self-worth, love and appreciation.

“When I was a model, I used to model with girls of all shapes and sizes and the ones who looked like ‘models’ got the jobs. This broke my heart as it didn’t seem fair to other girls who looked different.

“I started this company because I wanted to show every man and woman just how beautifully and fearfully we are made. My aim was to bridge the gap between the disadvantaged from the fortunate.

“I decided to start a company that will build confidence in young people in terms of personal presentation and public speaking. We offer training on work etiquette, telephone and table etiquette, personal development, grooming, styling, personal presen tation, make-up application and advice, skin care, nail care, posture, health and fitness and preparing for interviews.”

Often, she said, young people lose out on opportunities because of a lack of self-confidence, which is vital in the corporate sector.

“We teach them about presentation - one doesn’t need to get into debt by purchasing expensive clothes, it simply means looking presentable and professional. Our company is not about modelling, it is about reminding young people they have the power to become anyone or anything they set their minds to,” said Ma’ani Hessari.

Evolve is working with a few schools and organisations in KZN to empower young people.

“If you are surrounded by people who do not have the same vision as you and constantly put you down, that’s great. They are put into your life to be your motivation. Without them, you will not know how amazing you are.

“Stay positive and focus on why you are here - you are here to be awesome.”

Ma’ ani Hessari hopes that one day Evolve will be one of the biggest platforms for youth development in the world
