THE Team of Choice could potentially have two players in the team when the South African under-23s take on Tunisia in two friendly games on September 4 and 7.

Deolin Mekoa, who has been a regular fixture in the United midfield so far this season, has cracked the nod, and defender Kwanda Mngonyama, who the club are trying to lure on a permanent deal from Mamelodi Sundowns, has also made the side.

United head coach Mandla Ncikazi confirmed to The Witness on Monday that Mngonyama — who was on loan at the club last season, and a crucial cog in the team’s run that saw them finish in the top half — was a player they were extremely keen on bringing to Maritzburg.

Mekoa (22) joined the club a year ago from Durban SAB League side Young Cavalliers FC and impressed as the club achieved their best league position. On Tuesday, he said he was happy with his selection, and hoped it would push him to further honours.

“I feel good about it because I’ve been working hard. “I’ve been playing well and I’m very happy to get the opportunity to represent my country,” Mekoa told The Witness as the United squad arrived in Johannesburg for their league game against Bidvest Wits last night.

The national under-23 team will take part in the 2015 U23 Africa Cup of Nations in Senegal from November 28 to December 12. The top three teams at the competition will qualify for the 2016 Rio de Janeiro Olympic Games
