Young pupil gang raped at home

ASHDOWN residents fear for their safety after a 14-year-old girl was allegedly gang raped by two unknown men at her home on Monday afternoon.

The Siyahlomula High School Grade 8 pupil had just returned home after school when the incident happened.

A source, who did not want to be identified, said the girl, whose identity cannot be revealed, had come home after school and found that the house keys were not in their normal secret hiding place, and when she pushed the door open she found two unknown men inside.

“When she got in, they first threatened her with knives before raping her. She then alerted community members and was later taken to hospital,” said the source.

A resident, who did not want to be identified, said the community now fear for their lives.

Attempts to get comment from the girl’s mother were unsuccessful as she said she feared for her child’s safety. Plessislaer Cluster spokesperson Captain Musa Ntombela confirmed the incident, saying two unknown men had threatened the girl with knives, covered her eyes and mouth before raping her, thereafter fleeing.

No arrests have been made.

Ward 23 councillor Dumisani Phungula raised concern about the high rate of drug abuse in the area which often leads to people committing such crimes.

“We are concerned about the high rate of drug dealing in this area. I’m told that most people, who are involved in drug dealing, are former offenders. We urge the police to work with the community to identify houses that have become drug havens.

“We have already started street-safety committees who will work with the police and community policing forums to fight crime and corruption. The rape of such a young girl is unjust and inhuman,” said Phungula
