FORMER DJ and events organiser Fano Gumede of Fanotainment is opening a DJ academy in town.

The academy is aimed at growing and upgrading local DJs who are passionate about music.

The main focus is learning the art of beat mixing, said Gumede.

“It has been my dream to grow and help young people pursue their dream in music. I cannot shy away and ignore the fact that we have marvellous talent in Pietermaritzburg. There are many young people who are talented, but the challenge is a institution or an individual who can assist them. It is up to us to help them fulfil their dreams.

“We need to grow people from our city and acknowledge them. It has been something I have always wanted. Let us support our local youngsters by giving them a platform. That is exactly what I am doing,” he said.

Gumede has been in the music industry for more than 20 years.

He has been a mentor for famous DJs in KZN. About the academy he said, it’s time he let other youngsters shine.

“The academy will give them a platform and help them with the basics. They will learn how to select tracts, that is another strategy a DJ has to learn. Music production classes will also be opening soon,” said Gumede.

The academy will be operating at Cotton Pub at 235 Boshoff Street, which is run by Gumede.

Classes will be divided into three sessions - the first one is theory, then introduction to beat mixing and advanced mixing. A crash course of event co-ordinating will be added.

This will help DJs organise their own events and not rely on other promoters to get bookings.

Gumede can be contacted on 083 499 4122 or WhatsApp 063 221 886.
