PIETERMARITZBURG’S Hlengiwe Mfeka will fly the country’s flag high next week as she represents South Africa at the eighth Pixel International Conference ICT for Language Learning in Italy to take place from 12 to 15 November.

Mfeka, a former teacher and current project manager for School Net South Africa, will present a research paper on learning languages using information and communications technology (ICT).

The conference is aimed at bringing together experts from all over to share their findings, expertise and experience on innovative language teaching and learning solutions. School Net is an NGO that focuses on developing and expanding the use of the internet in South African schools.

Funded by the DG Murray Trust, SchoolNet SA had a pilot project where it identified five schools in the Howick area and pupils were trained on incorporating Xboc Kinect and Intel Tablets with their classroom activities.

Mfeka said the pilot project was successful to an extent that they then incorporated ICT in enhancing language skills among pupils.

“Our focus is on English oral acquisition at Foundation Phase. We started training teachers on how to develop literacies using Tablets. We did a comparative analysis between schools that were using ICT to improve language and better performing schools who were not incorporating ICT in their classroom activities.

“We established that there was a huge improvement among those who used these technologies.”

She said this is a ground-breaking opportunity for her to be able to be listened to and share information with international gurus in the ICT sector.
