VISITORS got first-hand experience of great weather and fun activities, including a neon run of 5 km, a swim over the Vaal River, mountain biking over 30 km and 65 km, speed boat demonstrations and the x-factor paddle boat rides.

These experiences were all part of the package of the prestigious 2015 national GWK Ghaap River Xtreme sports event, hosted at Broadwater River Estate in Douglas in the Northern Cape.

Hosted over the weekend (23-25/10) at the private river estate, nestled on the banks of the Vaal River, it was once again a great success.

The prestigious national extreme sports and music event saw trick skiers from France, perforing various tricks in a bid to compete for the Guinness Book of Records.

Live music performances kept visitors enjoying the hospitality of the Northern Cape.

There were more than 30 exhibitors, and visitors could enjoy Landzicht wine and chocolate pairing tasting, among other things..

The Local is Lekker stall with true Douglas products was amongst the popular ones for visitors, while the kids entertainment area ensured much fun for the young ones attending the event with their parents.

According to Mandy de Klerk, chairperson for GWK Ghaap River Xtreme, all proceeds from this event will go to local charities, including Douglas Droomdorp, Spes Bona Old Age Home, the High School Douglas, the Brilliant Cut Training Centre and the Douglas Round Table 224.

According to Sharron Lewis, CEO of the Northern Cape Tourism Authority, this was once again a perfect opportunity for the province to showcase its capacity for hosting world-class sporting events.

“The Northern Cape has proven that it has the infrastructure and logistical expertise to host mega-events that will enhance its position as the premier adventure sports destination in Africa.

“This event also served as a platform to highlight the unique and diverse attractions of the Northern Cape and the warm hospitality of its people,” explained Lewis.
