Audit campaign a ‘complete failure’

2015-06-10 06:00

LEONA KLEYNHANS, DA member in the Free State Legislature:

IN 2009, as part of the ANC election campaign, the honourable premier Elias “Ace” Magashule announced the Clean Audit 2014 campaign that would see all municipalities and provincial departments obtaining clean audits by the year 2014.

Perhaps it would have been better if Magashule had not announced such an ambitious programme at all, because the ANC in government’s track record can never live up to such lofty ideals.

Unfortunately this campaign has been a failure. In fact, the situation in all Free State municipalities has deteriorated.

Irregular expenditure has increased, procurement and supply chain mismanagement are serious problems in all municipalities and only four municipalities in the Free State received a clean audit.

A total of 15 of all Free State municipalities have collapsed completely and are dysfunctional. They cannot pay Eskom and water boards and owe a collective debt of R3,2 billion.

Perhaps Magashule would like to explain to the people of the Free State why this Clean Audit 2014 Campaign was a complete failure, and what he intends to do about it.

Or is this another one of the ANC’s good stories to tell?
