ELIZABETH MOLAPO, a BCom Economics student in her final year at the University of the Free State (UFS), is a contestant from Bloemfontein who is among the top 25 semi-finalists for Miss South Africa 2016. She is also a model, master of ceremonies and public speaker.

Why do you want to be Miss South Africa and what do you think you will be able to bring to the role?

My time at university has given me such an array of skills and has prepared me for my next chapter. Miss South Africa is an opportunity I have looked forward to for a long time.

My passion lies with women’s development, empowerment and independence. I want to make an impact and leave a legacy as Miss South Africa 2016.

Which previous Miss South Africas have inspired you and why? Definitely Peggy-Sue Khumalo, primarily because of my interest in the investment and banking sector. Khumalo is not just a beautiful woman, but also a successful banker.

And Jo-Ann Strauss: what a phenomenal and timeless beauty. She is both a business and family woman. I relate to her because that is where I see myself in the next ten to 15 years.

Who are your role models? Who has inspired you and why? I have to start with my mother – the strongest, most courageous and most independent woman in my life. I have seen my mother going through tough seasons and she came out of them a stronger woman every time.

I also admire Khanyi Dhlomo, as she has been successful not only as a business woman, but as a brand. I admire her drive and her hunger to be successful.

Tell us a bit about your family.

My father, mother and younger brother mean the world to me. Ntate Nkuebe (I do not really call my father “dad’’) is funny and a gentle giant. He is my hero and loves his children tremendously. My mother, Metetso, comes across as shy, but is a vibrant and a cheerful woman. My brother is charming and often has us laughing in the house.

I would not be where I am today without my family.

What do you do in your spare time? I love children. They are a pleasure and a joy. I often take young girls (aged three to five) for classes where we have fun doing activities.

What is your message to young girls and young women in South Africa? Strive for empowerment and independence, dream big and realise that your dream is yours to achieve and make a reality.

If you won the Miss South Africa crown and were able to meet one person, who would it be and why? Polo Leteka Radebe. What an example of what a woman should strive for: excellence!

She is a South African entrepreneur and venture capitalist.

What is the one thing people would be surprised to know about you? I come from a small chieftaincy in a small village, Likhetlane, in Lesotho. This is where my grandfather was a chief and it has been the responsibility of my grandmother and uncles since his passing away.

What is on your playlist? I love a bit of everything, whether it be hip-hop, Randamp;B or deep house. At the moment I am listening to Hillsong’s Empire album.

What is your favourite TV show? I love Dragons Den with Polo Leteka and I am currently hooked on Empire.

Your favourite meal? My mother’s Sunday dish. Whatever she chooses to make that Sunday, becomes my favourite meal.

What makes you proud to be South African?

It is the truth that our country is alive with possibilities. We are talented, different, dynamic, vibrant, ambitious, diversified and unique. The rest of the world cannot help but want to know what it is about this country that makes it amazing
