ACCLAIMED poet and all-round performer Reitumetse “Skietreker” Seape has released his third poetry book which he says will resonate with many readers.

The 29-year-old Thaba Nchu-born Seape is a complex character who is passionate about the word and describes himself as a musician, poet, writer and performer.

Having released his first book, Apartheid ek sal jou boks Volume 1, in 2007 with the sequel Apartheid ek sal jou boks Volume 2 released in 2012, Seape describes his latest book, Respect our gifts, as some of his best work yet.

The two volumes of Apartheid ek sal jou boks were written in Afrikaans, which Seape is quite passionate about, while Respect our gifts is written in English with a peppering of Sotho.

Skietreker, as Seape is affectionately known to his legion of fans, sat down with Express editor, Jabulani Dlamini, to discuss his latest offering.

Who is the book dedicated to?

The book is dedicated to anyone who has not seen the colour of light, it is for anyone who can read and write.

Who are you targeting with the book?

I have not targeted anyone, because at times when we target we completely miss the point, whilst when we dedicate something it goes straight to the heart. I want to get people to finish as powerfully as they started. Many of us start strong, but finish poorly sometimes.

Years pass between the release of your books. Why is this?

There was a time I fell lyrically, spiritually and in every other aspect of my life and I lived without meaning, so I decided to go back to the crossroads and try to find myself again. I tried to run away, but it did not work, but now I write with an element of healing and with a calling. The transition came when I stopped writing for myself and I asked God to take control.

Where to from here?

I want to perform on world stages.

Would you encourage others to get into performance poetry?

Yes, but only if you have the love, commitment, passion and dedication to do this. Above all these you have to have faith, because with faith you do not even have to knock because God will knock for you and everyone inside will already know you are coming.

Eye dedicate

I dedicate this book

To all those people who started

But never had the strength to finish

Those whose ideas andamp; thoughts

Where crushed andamp; dreams diminished

I dedicate this book to God

As I kneel down

To thank Him

For trusting me with this gift

Because when I first started

Many used to hate

But now when I look into the mirror

All they do is show respect

I dedicate this book

To all those people

Who are physically able

But are blind spiritually

Because they will hold it andamp; feel the heat

But they will never get to see it

So I dedicate this book

To all those people

Who will never get to see

The colour of light

But because life is a gift

With respect I’ve allowed God

To sneeze andamp; give light andamp; length

Morena ka Lentswe

I speak life into these pages

Yes I pray

I pray for all those people

Who failed 7 times

And they gave up

But this morning

God has changed their situation

And they are smiling and praying

Because they can see

And smell the sound of peace andamp; silence in pieces

I dedicate this book

To those who have made it

And now because of Grace

They have gone back

To go and fetch those who were left behind

By scratches andamp; stones of dust

Now they bow down to worship

And Father I know you are listening

So with this gift

I dedicate this book to fear

May his soul rest in peace
