A “BEAR” that actually turned out to be a dassie, created quite a stir in Moseme Street, Rocklands, last week.

The dassie had found its way into Maggie Mpopetsi’s outside toilet where it had spent the night before neighbours noticed it and began chasing it.

On Thursday (27/08) at around 13:00, Express arrived on the scene with the dassie having run into an adjoining neighbour, Olebogeng Thoopa’s, yard.

When asked why she did not call the authorities when she had first noticed the dassie, Mpopetsi said she had hoped the dassie would have left on its own accord by the morning.

Mpopetsi’s neighbour, Thoopa, said they tried all manner of ideas to chase the dassie away, but with no success.

“We poured water on it, but it would not move and when the police arrived they sprayed it with pepper spray. This finally got it to run away into yet another neighbour’s yard.

With the dassie becoming increasingly agitated and running in and out of places to hide, it finally took a last defiant stand under the bonnet of a Peugeot Convertible, parked in the last yard it had run into.

Despite starting the vehicle and even reversing it, the dassie would not come out of the engine. No one could even see where it was.

The crowd that had by now gathered to witness this spectacle, concluded that it must be witchcraft with the dassie sent to harm whoever it was sent to, especially because it was proving to be elusive to catch and kill.

“I believe this is witchcraft. This thing is uncatchable. We have been chasing it for the past five hours. It appears to have come with an aim,” said Thoopa.

The rather fat dassie eventually got out of the engine. It attempted yet another escape which ultimately proved to be a fatal one as its big body could not fit through the burglar bars.

The dassie was then trapped in the corner of the yard.

Some people in the crowd seized the opportunity. They moved into the yard and attacked the dassie with sticks until it stopped moving.

Police officials finally put the subdued, but still alive, dassie into a bag and put it in the boot of the police vehicle and drove off with it
