Disciplinary steps taken

THE Free State Department of Health has instituted internal disciplinary steps against Sonti Elizabeth Monatisa after the Welkom police had discovered medicine worth R17 000 at her house recently.

The woman is employed as a pharmaceutical assistant at the Bophelong Clinic in Thabong, Welkom.

Tebogo Oepeng, spokesperson for the MEC for Health, Dr Benny Malakoane, said the suspect had been suspended from duty after the police had busted her.

He said while the police investigation was ongoing, the department was also busy with internal investigations into the saga of stolen medicine.

Among the medicine reportedly discovered at the woman’s house in Doorn, a suburb in Welkom, were life-saving medication such as ARVs and TB medication.

Some medicine was even reported to be out of stock countrywide. Oepeng said about some medicine that had reportedly reached its expiration date: “No one has the right to have medicine stocked by government. The fact that some medicine had expired, is immaterial.”

Monatisa was apparently arrested after a construction worker at her house had blown the whistle, informing the Welkom police, who discovered the medicine at the house.

The woman is set to re-appear in the Welkom Magistrate’s Court on 28 July. Her first appearance was on Monday, 13 July, and she was granted bail
