ESKOM has moved to notify all parties as the company contemplates interrupting bulk electricity supply to the top 20 defaulting municipalities across the country from 5 June.

As at 31 March, the total municipal arrear debt greater than 30 days was R4,6 billion. Of this amount, the top 20 defaulting municipalities are currently indebted to Eskom to the amount of R3,68 billion.

The interim chief of Eskom Zethembe Khoza says: “Non-payment of electricity undermines Eskom’s statutory obligation to generate and supply electricity. We have therefore decided to exercise our right to disconnect the supply of electricity to defaulting municipalities.”

Eskom is contemplating an interruption of electricity from 06:00 to 10:00 and from 17:00 to 21:00 Monday to Friday, and from 07:00 to 10:00 and 17:00 to 20:00 Saturday and Sunday.

Top 20 defaulting municipalities are: Maluti-a-Phofung; Matjhabeng; Emalahleni; Ngwathe; Thaba Chweu; Lekwa; Govan Mbeki; City of Matlosana; Naledi; Thabazimbi; Msukaligwa; Lichtenburg; Nala; Makana; Madibeng; Randfontein; Dihlabeng; Nketoana; Nama Khoi; and Westonaria
