THE Free State Department of Education will host the Language Development and Enrichment Festival for gr. 4 to gr. 7 learners on Friday (25/09) and Saturday (26/09) at Phillip Sanders from 10:00.

The purpose of the festival is to improve the level of literacy among Free State learners and support them to achieve the expected levels of performance in English.

The Basic Education Sector Plan and Action Plan to 2019 require that 65% of learners should achieve 50% and above in First Additional Language (FAL) by 2019.

Learners showcase their ability to master the language by taking part in debate, reading, drama and spelling bee competitions.

Through the festival, the department aims to develop and improve learners’ literacy skills and promote the culture of reading among the Free State learners.

“Learners who read for pleasure perform better in the classroom, and not just in reading ability, vocabulary and spelling,” says Free State Education MEC, Tate Makgoe.

The 2015 Language Development and Enrichment for gr. 4 to gr. 7 learners have been planned as follows:

) Gr. 4 to gr. 6 learners will participate in the spelling bee competition;

) Gr. 5 to gr. 7 learners in the reading and debate competitions; and

) Gr. 4 to gr. 7 learners in drama performance.

The Department of Basic Education Spelling Bee South Africa Championships will be held from 8 to 10 October in Johannesburg.

The theme for the 2015 festival is Reading to nourish the minds by stimulating thoughts, ideas and language
