Fuel price increases

2015-06-10 06:01

SOUTH AFRICANS, particularly the poor, continue to suffer due to the lack of economic growth and other economic variables in the country.

This sees people facing two major challenges – an increase in the fuel price and high unemployment.

The first blow came on Wednesday (27/05) when Stats South Africa announced that the unemployment rate in South Africa had increased to 26,4% in the first quarter of 2015 from 24,3% in the fourth quarter of 2014. This indicates that millions of South Africans face a bleak future.

South Africans were dealt another blow on Friday (29/05) when the Department of Energy announced an increase in the price of fuel and paraffin.

The new price of fuel came into effect on Tuesday (02/06) at midnight.

The increase is as follows: Petrol increased by 47c/litre en diesel by 49c/litre, while illuminating paraffin now costs 56c more per litre.

The Department of Energy said the main reason for the fuel price increase was the high crude oil prices which had resulted in higher prices (on average) for all the petroleum products in the international markets in May compared to April
