Griffons, Griquas in tug-of-war

2015-07-01 06:05

AFTER enjoying a well-deserved break this past weekend, the Down Touch Griffons return to action to continue their quest to defend their Absa Currie Cup First Division title on Saturday (04/07).

The local lads are gearing up for a tough battle against the in-form Griquas in the championship qualifier fixture in Kimberley. This will be the home boys’ third qualifier fixture against the Northern Cape side, who are inspired following their 48-21 win over the Leopards in their qualifier match played last weekend (27/06).

The Welkom boys boast one win, 25-21, over the SWD Eagles and will be gunning for their second on Saturday.

The Griquas boast two wins after three qualifier matches played thus far and are topping the standings with 11 points. The Griffons are fifth on the log on four points and are compelled to win to remain intact in qualifying for the championship.

Saturday’s encounter requires the Welkom lads to give their all against the gutsy Griquas, who are equally determined to win this year’s championship.

The hosts are looking to dethrone the champions. An unfavourable result for the Welkom boys will be devastating in the championship charge. It will see them lose ground in their quest to successfully defend the crown they had won in 2014.

The Griffons pin their hopes on tried-and-tested warriors Martin Sithole, Louis Strydom, Boela Abrahams and Norman Nelson to plot the downfall of the Griquas in Saturday’s clash. Sithole and Strydom, who did not feature in their side’s win against the Eagles, are expected to add firepower to the Griffons attack
