Harmony out of contention

2015-06-10 06:01

THE unthinkable happened in the Lejweleputswa regional final of the Sanlam Kay Motsepe Schools Cup, with the Harmony Secondary School crashing out of the competition.

The team from Virginia suffered a crucial 1-2 defeat to Concordia of Theunissen. The defeat to its rival means Harmony will not be a prominent feature at this year’s Free State and national finals of the prestigious schools’ tournament, which offers prize money of R100 000 to the provincial winners and R1 million to the national champion.

The Lejweleputswa final was staged at the Page Park Stadium in Brandfort on Sunday (07/06).

It was the first time in the history of the competition that Harmony did not manage to progress beyond this stage of the u.17 boys’ competition.

The school’s earliest previous elimination was in the provincial final against the Bloemfontein-based Louis Botha Technical High School, which won the provincial leg in 2013 and finished as runners-up nationally.

Harmony won the national title in 2011 finished in second place in 2010 and in third and fourth place respectively in 2012 and 2013, winning a total of R2,6 million
