Khompela guilty of contempt of court

2015-04-30 16:14

LEONA KLEYNHANS, DA MPL in the Free State:

POLICE, Roads and Transport MEC Butana Khompela was sentenced to 30 days’ imprisonment suspended for five years in his official capacity for contempt of court.

This followed after Komphela had wilfully ignored a previous court order to bring order and stability to the Fouriesburg and Lesotho taxi routes.

Komphela neglected to take decisive action against traffic officials in cahoots with the Fouriesburg Taxi Association in waging a low-intensity taxi war on the route.

Free State traffic officials stationed along this route, prevented taxis registered to operate on the route and associated with other taxi associations from transporting passengers and in some cases even damaged the vehicles. Komphela was informed of such instances and wilfully ignored these complaints.

The failure of the MEC and his department to intervene positively in such matters creates the perception that senior public officials might hold interests in the taxi industry and that this volatility serves those interests.

Last year the low-intensity taxi war along the Ladybrand and Maseru route resulted in the closure of the Maseru border post, negatively impacting the free movement of people and goods and services between our two countries.

The contempt for the course of justice displayed by Komphela is not surprising. It has become the norm for senior ANC leaders from Pres. Jacob Zuma to Police Minister Nathi Nhleko to undermine the spirit and letter of our Constitution and orders of the courts. Komphela’s actions is a clear indication of an inherent ANC culture of not only treating our courts with contempt, but also treating the suffering of our people in this province with contempt
