MILLICENT WANGRA has won the provincial TopStars competition, beating 12 other contestants during the roadshow semi-final at the Windmill Casino in Bloemfontein.

This exciting singing competition is specifically for workers of the Shoprite Group from across 16 African countries.

The 39-year-old Wangra, who works for Checkers Saints in Welkom, was clearly speechless after she was announced as the winner for this region.

“Oh my God, I can’t believe this! I really can’t believe this. I’m excited and speechless at the same time. I really don’t know what to say,” Wangra told Express.

“The competition was extremely tough and I think any of the contestants could have won. They all came here thoroughly prepared and sang beautifully. I’m happy the judges chose me,” she said.

Now Wangra will compete for the ultimate prize against winners from other regions during the grand finale in Cape Town on 17 October.

“I’m going to prepare well for the grand finale. People should expect the unexpected.

“I feel that I have what it takes to win it if I remain myself,” she said.

Mynie Grové, TopStars organiser, said this singing competition started in 2006 as part of a team-building programme for the company.

“The competition has grown in leaps and bounds since then. We are happy more and more workers are showing interest in the competition,” she said.

“Congratulations to Millicent for winning the Bloemfontein roadshow. She deserved the title because she sang beautifully. She was powerful, she didn’t over-sing, and she didn’t show off on the stage. She just knew what she was doing on the stage, that’s why she has won. We’ll see her in Cape Town later this year,” concluded Grové
