A GROUP of six men are expected to reappear in the Welkom Magistrate’s Court on Thursday (27/08).

They face charges of the possession of unlicensed firearms.

The men were arrested at two separate places during routine searches a week ago.

Thabo Mazibuko (37), Bongane Morake (29), Jacob Sello (32) and Velly Ntsuku (36) were caught in Welkom’s suburb of St Helena on 14 August.

The police went on to arrest Mthuli Dube (41) and Thulani Msimango (33) on the R34 road between Kroonstad and Welkom.

Const. Kethabile Mofokeng, Welkom police spokesperson, said the guns and items found in the possession of the suspected armed robbers had been confiscated upon their arrest. She said the police had botched the armed robbery at St Helena after receiving a tip-off.

According to her, officers waited near the Tugela circle in St Helena on the lookout for four armed men matching the description of the suspects Mazibuko, Morake, Sello and Ntsuku.

“One of the suspects, who was carrying a bag, threw it away when he saw the police vehicle.

“The police parked the vehicle next to the suspects. When one of the officers picked up the bag to search it, he found a firearm. It was confiscated,” said Mofokeng.

Dube and Msimango were arrested after a firearm, an airgun, and a few cigarettes had been found in the vehicle they were travelling in.

Mofokeng said the six men were expected to apply for bail during their appearance in court on Thursday
