Mental health in focus

2015-10-21 06:00

MEMBERS of society are urged to work together as a collective to make mental health visible and not something to be ashamed of.

Mental illnesses are just like any other disease, and more should be done to make people recognise mental health problems and provide help.

“We all need to be mindful and sensitive to deal with mental health conditions,” according to a statement from Lulu Mxekezo of the Northern Cape Department of Health.

The statement was aimed at raising awareness during World Mental Health Month which is observed in October every year. The theme for this year’s Mental Health Month is Dignity in Mental Health, which aims at ensuring the provision of mental healthcare services in a dignified manner.

“In most cases, healthcare provision for mental health patients is not properly coordinated, and their lifespan is cut short as other health conditions are neglected,” says Mxekezo.

“This is also due to many mental health patients around the world being deprived of their human rights. They are not only discriminated against, but are also subject to neglect in both mental health facilities and the community.

“Poor quality care due to a lack of qualified health professionals and dilapidated facilities leads to further violations.”
