THE Welkom police’s fight against the trade in illicit gold dust and money laundering saw them bust a man suspected of being a dispatcher of letters for illegal gold miners, as well as confiscating R230 000.

The police arrested the 54-year-old suspect on Friday (21/08) near the Manny’s shopping complex in Welkom.

Molebogeng Lechesa, Welkom police spokesperson, said many letters written in various languages were confiscated after the suspect’s vehicle had been searched.

She said the letters, suspected to be of underground illegal gold miners (zama-zamas), had the names of the people they were apparently to be delivered to.

Following interrogation, the police went to the suspect’s residence in St Helena Village, where R230 000 was found locked inside a drawer.

“The suspect could not provide proof of where the money comes from. He was immediately arrested for conspiracy to assist illegal miners in committing a crime,” said Lechesa.

She said the suspect was employed at one of the mines in Welkom
