Mistakes cost Griffons game

2015-04-30 17:03

THE Griffons’ slip ups against the Valke in the Vodacom Cup tournament fixture have cost them a golden chance to consolidate their position on the table.

Played last Friday (10/04), this was yet another must-win game for the Griffons. The local boys suffered a 38-17 defeat at the hands of the visitors who have consolidated their fifth spot on the log in the Northern Section of the Vodacom Cup. The Griffons are still in position six with five points, while the Valke boast eight points.

The Griffons lacked cohesion, made costly mistakes, which included giving away possession and giving away penalties in the danger zone. The visitors, the Valke, capitalised to make the Griffons’ backyard at theWelkom Stadium a walk in the park, cruising to a 38-17 victory.

The boys in purple gave the home fans some glimmer of hope to consolidate their standing on the table when Martin Sithole scored the first try and Louis Strydom conver-ted to give the locals the lead. However, they failed to rise to the occasion and suffered their second loss at home and their second in the tournament.

The result puts the Griffons under immense pressure to win ahead of a tough away-clash against the second-seeded Blue Bulls at Loftus Versfeld B in Pretoria on Friday (17/04).

The locals are bound to pull out all the stops against the Bulls to keep alive their prospect of finishing in the top four and reaching the quarterfinal of the first division
