THE retiring provincial commissioner, Lt. Gen. Janet Basson, was referred to as a formidable woman who took her work seriously and was always available at all hours of the day.

The statement was made by the MEC for Safety and Liaison in the Northern Cape, Barbara Barlett, during Basson’s farewell function at the Mittah Seperepere Convention Centre on Friday night (14/08).

The Northern Cape and the South African Police Service (SAPS) bade farewell to Basson during a day filled with activities. It began in the morning with a sent-off parade held in her honour in the presence of the national Police commissioner, Riya Phiyega, the minister of police, Nathi Nhleko, and other highranking generals of the police.

The evening ceremony was also well attended by highranking officials and it turned out to be an evening to remember for the outgoing commissioner as speaker after speaker heaped praises on her.

The mood of the evening in general was celebratory as Basson kept the attendees entertained.

Bartlett was followed by more speakers of different formations in the police, such as the SAPS Women’s Network, station commanders, cluster commanders, the Independent Police Investigative Directo-rate, Business Against Crime, Community Policing Forums and the South African Policing Union.

Phiyega gave the key note address and described Basson in the same way as other speakers who had spoken before her.

Describing Basson as a woman of character, Phiyega said: “Janet Basson proved to be a forward-thinking leader, who walked upright, in short steps and with a focused face. Basson gave 36 years and eight months of her life to the police. She was once a prosecutor in the North-West and this makes her an all-rounder. She paved the way for women in a man’s world. She did it her own way, as Frank Sinatra would say in his song. She embodies selflessness and she stood the test of time. The country will forever be grateful to her.”

Basson’s daughter, Janet, also had a chance to thank her mother for her dedication to the family.

In reply, Basson said that she was humbled by the occasion and the praises heaped on her.

In encouraging other members who remain in the police, Basson said: “The organisation (police) grants us opportunities that other South Africans do not get. It is therefore up to you to enhance your careers to reach the sky.”

She said that the Northern Cape has gems in the police force. She thanked everyone who crossed her path and said that it was good to retire in the province where she had been born and bred
