Police celebrate Mandela day

THE South African Police Service (SAPS) in the Northern Cape joined the rest of the country in showing their gratitude for International Nelson Mandela Day by reaching out to different communities throughout the province.

On Friday (17/07) the station, together with various stakeholders from the community, brought smiles to the faces of the elderly people at the Lena Mouers Day- Care Centre.

The team of more than 60 people renovated three rooms, two bathrooms as well as the kitchen.

The rooms underwent an entire transformation with new curtains and windows fitted.

The walls were repainted and the garden was also attended to.

According to Maj. Dimakatso Mooi, the elderly were pampered with gifts and soup while they sat in the sun and watched as the transformation took place.

WO Anna van Dyk for Upington Social Crime Prevention commended the businesses and government organisations for volunteering their services on the day and also for sponsoring the material required for the renovations.

On the same day, Kimberley members renovated a shack shared by a family of seven X five children aged between one and 11 years and their parents X at Greenpoint.

“The family has been sharing a small one-roomed shack. Groceries, blankets and clothes were donated to them. The members ended the day by preparing a meal and sharing it with the family,” added Mooi.

Port Nolloth also did their bit when they planted 200 trees at Lydia Links Park.

The project was spearheaded by administration clerk Loraine Swanepoel at the station, who envisioned a green and inviting environment for the area where recently 200 RDP houses had been built.

“The trees were donated by the Department of Forestry and Fisheries. Provincial Corporate Communication handed out blankets at the Hospice in Richtersveld in Port Nolloth.”

Mooi added that in Marydale, members of the SAPS, Community Policing Forum (CPF) and the community donated blankets to the needy and prepared a garden for plantation in August.
