Put resources in townships

2015-09-30 06:00

MOHANELOA TSOAELI, Economic Freedom Fighters’ Free State spokesperson:

THE Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF)

in the Free State is disturbed by the level of gang related crimes in the townships. The community lives in fear of being victims of gangs.

The levels of unemployment and poverty have given rise to harmful activities among our youth. The growing population, coupled with a scarcity of recreational facilities adds fuel to an already volatile situation. The high level of alcohol consumption and free availability of substances like glue, marijuana, mandrax and nyaope in our townships have led to this.

The SAPS and the systems of government to combat crime in the townships leave much to be desired. The government maintains a high level of policing in the CBD and suburbs, because they are afraid of investors and capitalists. If one looks at the resources that are available for the SAPS to fight crime in the townships, it is clear that the safety of Africans and their environment means nothing to our government. The very leadership of the ruling party do not stay in the crime-infested townships, but in the suburbs, away from the community members who voted them into power. That is why they cannot see the situation. The EFF is clear on this: if the community retaliates against the gang’s victimisation, the peace of the community will be at stake, as one incident could lead to another.

The situation would get out of hand and lives would be lost. We therefore urge the SAPS to pump resources into the township to prevent loss of life and damage to property
