SA paired with Angola

SOUTH AFRICA was handed a tough draw against Angola for the preliminary African qualifying rounds of the 2018 World Cup.

Bafana Bafana were paired with fellow Southern Africans Angola during a ceremony in Saint Petersburg. South Africa reached the 1998 and 2002 competitions via the qualifying route and were automatic 2010 World Cup contestants as hosts.

Only seven African ranking places divide South Africa and the Palancas Negras (Sable Antelopes) and the clash is a highlight of the draw. The recent Africa Cup of Nations qualifying form suggests a close contest during November with the first leg to be played in Angola.

Led by coach Ephraim “Shakes” Mashaba, Bafana drew goalless at home with Gambia last month while Angola whipped visiting Central African Republic by 4-0.

Seeding ensured there would not be many high-profile clashes, with that between four-time qualifiers Morocco and 2015 Cup of Nations semi-finalists Equatorial Guinea an exception. X SuperSport
