ELIZABETH MOLAPO, a BCom Economics student at the University of the Free State (UFS) in her final year, is the only contestant from Bloemfontein between the top 25 semi-finalists for Miss South Africa 2016. She is also a model, master of ceremonies and public speaker.

Why do you want to be Miss SA and what do you think you will be able to bring to the role? My time at university has given me such an array of skills and has prepared me for my next chapter. Miss South Africa is my current focus and I want to give my full attention to it. My passion lies with women’s development, empowerment and independence. I want to make an impact and leave a legacy as Miss South Africa 2016. It is my passion to be a mentor and a role model to women like those in my community.

Which previous Miss SA has inspired you and why?

Definitely Peggy-Sue Khumalo, primarily because of my interest in the investment and banking sector. Peggy-Sue is not just a beautiful woman, but also a successful banker. And Jo-Ann Strauss: what a phenomenal and timeless beauty. She is both a business and family woman.

Who are your role models? Who has inspired you and why? I have to start with my mother. I have seen my mother going through tough seasons and she came out of them a stronger woman every time. I also admire Khanyi Dhlomo as she has been successful not only as a business woman but as a brand.

Tell us a bit more about your family?

I absolutely adore my family. My father, mother and younger brother mean the world to me. Ntate Nkuebe (I do not really call my father ‘’dad’’) is funny and a gentle giant. He is my hero and loves his children tremendously. My mother “Metetso’’ comes across as shy but is a vibrant and a cheerful woman. My brother is charming and often has us laughing in the house.

What do you do in your spare time? I love children. They are a pleasure and joy so I love taking young girls (aged three to five years) for classes where we have fun doing various activities.

What is your message to young girls and young women in South Africa?

Strive for empowerment and independence, dream big and realise that your dream is yours to achieve.

If you won the Miss SA crown and were able to meet one person, who would it be and why?

Polo Leteka Radebe. What an example of what a woman should strive for: excellence! She is a South African entrepreneur and venture capitalist. The chief executive of Identity Partners, which is a fund management service firm.

What is the one thing people would be surprised to know about you?

I come from a small chieftaincy in a small village, Likhetlane, in Lesotho.

This is where my grandfather was a chief and it has now become the responsibility of my grandmother and uncles since his passing.

What are you reading?

I just finished reading Redeeming Love by Francine Rivers, a historical romance novel set in the 1850s. It is inspired by the book of Hosea from the Bible and its central theme is the redeeming love of God towards sinners.

What is on your playlist?

I love a bit of everything when it comes to my music, whether it be hip-hop, RnB or deep house. At the moment I am listening to Hillsong’s Empire album.

Your favourite TV show?

I love Dragons Den with Polo Leteka and I am currently hooked on Empire.

Your favourite meal? My mother’s Sunday dish, whatever she chooses to make that Sunday.

What makes you proud to be South African?

I am passionate about my country. It is the truth that our country is alive with possibilities.

We are talented, different, dynamic, vibrant, ambitious, diversified and so unique that the rest of the world cannot help but want to know what it is about this country that makes it amazing
