PHUTHADITJHABA. – The six accused who are facing charges of kidnapping and rape are expected to reappear before the Phuthaditjhaba Magistrate’s Court on Friday (31/07) after having briefly appeared before the same court last week.

They are Mpho Pinkoane (22), Tiisetso Mokoena (20), Thabang Mokoena (21), Lerato Dhlamini (21), Mpho Mabizela (20) and Moeketsi Khumalo (19).

It is alleged that the six young suspects from the Mangaung Village in Qwaqwa kidnapped and raped a minor (17) in the Maboshoane Section of the same village.

Sgt Mmako Mophiring, police spokesperson, said it was alleged that the girl had been at home with her guardian on 22 July at approximately 19:00 when there was a knock at their door.

“Her guardian opened the door and six young men stormed into the house. They forcefully took her (the victim) to a house where she was allegedly raped by four of the six suspects. She reported the incident to the police. The police acted swiftly and arrested the suspects at the scene,” Mophiring says.

“There has been an alarming increase in the rate of rape in the area of Phuthaditjhaba. Victims are attacked in their homes, young and old,” says Lt.Gen. Thabethe Mpembe.

“We urge the members of the community to stand against crime involving women and children by assisting in street patrols engaging their sector police managers.

“We also need engagement from churches and traditional leaders in moral regeneration. I have hope and trust that together we can create a safer environment.”
