SAM MASHININI, the MEC for Economic Development, Tourism and Environmental Affairs, has confirmed that the Seisa Ramabodu Stadium will be officially reopened later this month.

Speaking to Express after the media briefing of the Free State Global Investors Trade Bridge (FSGITB) at Free State House on Monday (05/10), Mashinini said the executive committee of the provincial parliament was planning to reopen the Seisa Ramabodu Stadium on 21 October.

“The Department of Sport, Arts and Culture is busy working on a programme for that particular day. I promise you we are going to have a massive gumba to celebrate the reopening of that stadium. It has been renamed to the Dr Petrus Molemela Stadium,” said Mashinini.

“We are excited about the facility as the provincial government. This is the second biggest stadium built in a township after the Orlando Stadium in Soweto. We are looking forward to the day it will be reopened,” he said.

Mashinini further revealed that the capacity of the Dr Petrus Molemela Stadium would be 22 000.

“At the moment I cannot divulge how much it has cost us to rebuild that stadium. I can give you the figures at a later stage. Remember, it took us almost three years to re-build the facility,” explained Mashinini.

The Dr Petrus Molemela Stadium was formerly known as the Seisa Ramabodu Stadium. It is a home of the local PSL side Bloemfontein Celtic.

The reopening ceremony will most probably include an intriguing Absa Premiership match between Bloemfontein Celtic and Mamelodi Sundowns on Wednesday, 21 October.
