THE energetic athlete Mvula Chabalala has been named the SuperSport Let’s Play Express Goldfields andamp; Northern Free State’s Sports Star of the Month for March.

He is a learner of the Moepeng Primary School in Maokeng, Kroonstad.

The 12-year-old Mvula was chosen as the winner based on his stunning performance in a series of track and field athletics events held during February and March this year.

He excelled at the different levels, zone, region and provincial as well as nationally, medalling in sprinting track events and long jump.

Mvula’s excellent form has also seen him set a new record in long jump in the Free State and South Africa in the u.12 category.

The athlete competes in the u.12 category, in the 100 m, 150 m and 4 x 100 m relay, as well as long jump. Mvula’s sterling performance saw him collect no less than six medals that include gold and silver.

The hasty athlete acquired a silver medal in the 4 x 100 m relay for boys u. 11 at the National Athletics Championships for Primary Schools held in the Paarl, Western Cape, last year.

During the recent athletics seasons, Mvula obtained several medals in long jump, 100 m, 150 m and in the 4 x 100 m relay.

This year he broke the provincial record in the long jump by 0,2 m at the Free State Athletics Championship. This record was also the national record.

At the same time he earned a silver medal in the 100 m and 150 m sprints. Recently he won a silver medal in the 150 m sprint event.

He scooped two gold medals for impressive performance in long jump and 4 x 100 m relay for boys u.12 at the South African National Championships for Primary Schools held in Germiston, Gauteng. Mvula lives by his motto: Excellence is sport.

In 2015, the SuperSport Let’s Play initiative celebrates ten years of getting the children of South Africa active.

SuperSport over time has evolved as the quintessential sports authority.

With such strong sporting influence within the South African market, SuperSport has been perfectly poised to harness this power and rally the public and corporates to truly make a difference in society. SuperSport identified that there were huge issues severely inhibiting the development of children through skills learned by playing, physical education and sport – all of which are imperative to the holistic development of young people.

It was from this insight that Let’s Play was born with the aim of elevating awareness of our social situation and to encourage play, activity and sport in schools.
