Take care of you car’s battery

2015-04-29 06:00

WITH the winter on our doorstep, one of the biggest problems many motorists experience is with their batteries.

From batteries running down, to the car not wanting to start at all on those cold winter mornings.

Express went out to find out why motorists experience these problems and had a chat with a professional about this.

Auto electrician Johnny Tabole gave expert advice to solve or help prevent some of these common problems brought on by winter.

Why do motorists typically experience problems with their batteries during winter?

Batteries tend to run down in winter mainly because the battery’s acid gets cold and because of this, the car might struggle to start, but once it does, it will start normally for the rest of the day.

How long does a standard car battery last?

Most standard batteries have a warranty of about 18 months.

What everyday things can a motorist do to prolong the lifespan of his car’s battery?

You can extend the life of your car’s battery by servicing it regularly (by professional battery specialists), and you can also check it regularly for leaks and out of the ordinary things.

How would one check their car battery?

You can check that the battery terminals (on the car) and battery poles (on the battery) are always clean.

What should you never do when it comes to your car’s battery?

Never swop the battery terminals (by connecting the negative terminal to the positive pole or vice versa) as this can seriously damage your alternator and never rev your car when it is idling and has no battery inside
