These foods help you detox

2015-08-05 06:00

EVERY year the health conscious consult detox programmes to cleanse their systems of stress or bad eating habits.

So what is the fuss about – is it a myth? Is it an attempt to fit in or is it the real deal?

The body is built to protect itself from foreign substances, including exogenous toxins (produced outside of the body) and endogenous toxins (produced in the body).

Although the liver is known as the body’s main site of detoxification, the skin, lungs and gastrointestinal tract also play an important role. The gastrointestinal tract is especially of significance, because it provides a physical barrier.

Detoxification through the adaptation of the diet mostly involves the inclusion of antioxidants and phytochemicals found in food.

Recently prebiotics and probiotics have been the talk of the town, as scientific evidence showed they promote the integrity of the gastrointestinal tract.

Examples of food that have shown to promote the body’s natural detoxification process include: cabbage, broccoli, spinach, lettuce, chard, kale, Brussel sprouts, garlic, egg yolk, onion, cabbage, green tea, freshly-juiced carrot, as well as celery, beet, parsley or ginger juice, citrus fruit and peels, grapes, berries, rosemary, turmeric and curry spice.
