Thrilling final to masters tournament

THE Thabong Masters FC is overjoyed with being crowned the inaugural champion of the Free State Masters Football Tournament. The team managed a hard-fought 3-2 win over the gutsy Qwaqwa Masters.

The tournament, held over the weekend of Saturday, 9 May, featured teams comprising footballers who had played professionally, as well as those who did not make it to the highest league. The participating teams were from Bloemfontein, Qwaqwa and Welkom.

The victorious Thabong Masters took the gold medal and the championship trophy, while the players of Qwaqwa Masters received silver medals as the runners-up of the championship.

The winners had to sweat to lift the trophy.

Qwaqwa Masters fought gallantly to level the score in the second half. However, a goal-keeping error by the visitors from the eastern Free State saw the locals capitalise to win the trophy.

The tournament made provision for masters teams of players older than 40, for those under the age of 40, as well as squads.

The Goldfields squad beat Thabong Legends 1-0 to win a gold medal and the Welkom squad (over 40) outclassed the Mayor’s team 2-1 to win gold in their category.
