Tournament empowers girls

QWAQWA. – The Department of Sport, Arts, Culture and Recreation, in partnership with the Department of Education and in consultation with provincial school sporting codes, will host the provincial top-schools finals for girls, namely the Dlala Mantombazana Girls’ Tournament.

This will be held on Saturday (15/08) at different venues in Qwaqwa.

Chess will be played at the Seotlong Agricultural School. The University of the Free State’s (UFS) Qwaqwa Campus will host a football game, while volleyball and basketball will be played at the Phuthaditjhaba Stadium.

The tournament is the culmination of the district top-schools finals, hosted by the four districts – Thabo Mofutsanyana, Fezile Dabi, Xhariep and Lejweleputswa – and the Mangaung Metro. It started at local schools as intra-schools tournaments to select teams at school level, and proceeded to the regional, municipal and district finals.

The girls’ tournament coincides with National Women’s Month celebrations – it is dedicated to the emancipation of women by the Department of Sport, Arts, Culture and Recreation.

Schools will compete in the following sporting codes and age groups:

) basketball u.13 and u.18

) soccer u.13 and u.18

) chess u.13, u.15 and u.18

) volleyball u.13 and u.17

The winning school will be exposed to the Local Talent Development Centres at district level for the Athlete Development Programme, to prepare the teams for the National Schools Championships to be held in Pretoria

Athletes will also have an opportunity to be selected for the R100 000 National Minister Bursary for best performance.
