JUSTICE has prevailed for a rape victim after the Virgi-nia Regional Court sentenced two rapists to ten and 45 years’ imprisonment respectively on Wednesday, 20 May.

The two accused, 19-year-old Disemelo Tadi Shuping and 22-year-old Bokang Basia Makhetha, were found guilty for raping the victim, then 16 years old, in December 2012.

Makhetha, who did not plead guilty to the charge of raping the victim, now 19 years old, was sentenced to ten years’ imprisonment.

Shuping pleaded guilty and was also convicted and sentenced to ten years’ imprisonment.

The court also found Shuping guilty of raping another woman in Bronville, Welkom, and for this crime he received 35 years’ imprisonment.

The two accused confronted the victim who was accompanied by another woman in Bronville at 18:30.

The court heard that the two men had threatened the victim with knives and had taken turns raping her at separate places. The victim was first raped in two different shacks in Extension 18 and in Hani Park, near Bronville. The two rapists released the victim after hearing that the police were searching for one of them.

The court heard that the two accused assaulted the victim, slapping her before freeing her from the place of captivity.

The conviction and sentencing of the two rapists followed an investigation by WO Thabiso Twala.

Pogisho Mabale was the prosecutor, while Magistrate Botshele Lefenya was on the bench
