THE Welkom police are searching for a suspect caught on a closed-circuit television (CCTV) camera.

He is wanted for allegedly defrauding a 59-year-old woman out of R14 624,40 on 25 September last year under the false pretence of being a police officer.

Const. Kethabile Mofokeng, spokesperson of the Welkom police, says the suspect has been identified as one of three men wanted regarding the fraud case. She says no arrest has been made as yet.

Mofokeng appeals for the public’s help in tracing the suspect and his accomplices.

She says the conmen convinced the victim to withdraw all her money after one of them had allegedly smeared the victim with what was suspected to have been muthi. The woman was apparently on her way to a taxi rank in Welkom’s central business district when one of the three conmen smeared her with the muthi.

One of the suspects apparently approached the victim and told her that he had also been smeared with muthi and that his money went missing as a result. The false story was to make the woman believe the same would happen to her.

Mofokeng said the conman then identified his companion as a police officer, convincing the woman to withdraw all her money before it disappeared. The two conmen accompanied the victim to make the transaction. The woman realised her money was missing after the conmen had dropped her at a junction outside Welkom. The three suspects are estimated to be between 30 and 59 years old.

Anyone with information about the suspects must call the investigative officer, Const. Mantshadi Ngake, on 057-391-6163 or 057-391-6245 during office hours
