Women in court regarding dagga worth about R25?000

TWO women arrested in possession of dagga are expected to reappear in the Welkom Magistrate’s Court on 2 September.

The suspects appeared in court last Wednesday (12/08) after the police had busted them on Monday, 10 August, in Thabong, Welkom.

The two women are Mamakgowa Mokitjane (27) and Fezeka Mitshi (24).

Malebo Khosana, Thabong police spokesperson, said the two women would remain in custody pending their next court appearance.

He said the suspects had been busted after police had received a tip-off about dagga kept in one of the apartments in the ladies’ hostel in Thabong.

Khosana said sniffing dog Natan had been instrumental in the arrest of the two women.

“Natan insisted on climbing on top of the bed in one of the bedrooms,” said Khosana.

“The members lifted up the bed and 35 bags of dagga were found hidden underneath.

“The dagga was confiscated and its weight was found to be about 25,648 kg with an estimated street value of around R25 648.”

He said the woman found in the house during the search was informed about her arrest for possession of dagga upon discovery of the dagga in the bags.

“She then told the members that the dagga was that of the other woman who brought them to her house for safekeeping in the early hours of that morning from Lusikisiki.

“The culprit, who was at another house in the ladies’ hostel, was called and was also arrested with her friend,” said Khosana
