THE Mangaung Drama and Dance Group (MDG) with funding from the National Lottery Commission and support from the Free State Department of Arts and Culture, will be hosting a daily workshop in performing arts to local community members free of charge on Wednesday (28/10) and Thursday (29/10) at the Sports Hall in Ficksburg.

The community members are welcome to join in at the workshops daily from 12:00 to 17:00. A workshop will be based on an accredited unit standard: Creative Original Performances.

The topics that will be covered are creating original performances which exhibit an understanding of generic dramatic principles and which communicate effectively through the visual and aural media and documenting the original performance in the form of a script, recording or dance notation.

It will conclude with the MDG staging their renowned production Moshoeshoe the Shaver and all community members are invited to come watch the show in the Sports Hall on the evening of the 28th and 29th at 19:00. The entrance is free.

Moshoeshoe the Shaver is a story based on a boy from a normal background of the Bakoteli clan, but what made him different was that he was a leader by heart, not a follower.

The beginning of the production projects his childhood and a transition dance piece was used to articulate his growth. The climax was painted in a choreographed manner of stick-fighting where he killed those that disregarded him.

Towards the end his father and grandfather express how they disapprove of his behaviour and approach the wise man from the village. The prophet instructs the grandfather and the father several times with regards to his deeds, he then gives his prophecy and crowns him as the King of Basotho – Moshoeshoe the Shaver.
