AT just 21, Elizabeth Hati’s young life has been tragically cut short and she leaves behind a year-old son.

According to Sanna Makoloane (47), a community leader in the Caleb Motshabi area where the tragedy took place, Elizabeth’s limp body was dragged out of her burning shack by her 12-year-old brother in the small hours of Friday morning 28 August in a heroic attempt to save her life.

Makoloane, a member of the South African National Civic Organisation (Sanco), said the community of Caleb Motshabi was under the scourge of prostitution, poverty, generally poor living conditions and drug and alcohol abuse.

“Our community is hurt and distraught by what has happened and will not take it lying down. We are very disturbed by the event, especially since it occurred during Women’s Month and, more so, they were a peaceful family with no hassles,” said Makoloane.

Elizabeth leaves behind her mother, Sarah Hati (47), whose only source of income is doing the laundry for community members and other odd jobs.

Sarah was too distraught to speak to Express.

‘’We want to warn all these people who are breaking the law and causing trouble for the community of Caleb Motshabi.

“We want to make it very clear that we are going to stand up and fight against all these things that give Caleb Motshabi a bad reputation,” Makoloane said.

A 26-year-old suspect, Neo Masakala, who was also the deceased’s boyfriend, appeared in the Bloemfontein Magistrate’s Court on Monday, 31 August, facing a charge of arson.

Const. Joy Xaba, police spokesperson, said the arson charge was likely to be changed to murder as the suspect had allegedly started the fire that had led to the young woman’s death.

Elizabeth’s funeral will take place over the weekend
