THE Welriedal Children and Youth Centre, situated in Riebeeckstad in Welkom, boasts with a fresh new appearance and garden.

The centre is one of the 34 child- and youth-care centres in the Free State managed by Engo, a non-profit organisation.

The improvements to the centre, both interior and exterior, are a result of goodwill gestures by different businesses and individuals who contributed to the renovation work of the centre.

The revamped centre exclusively accommodates 12 boys who are still in school.

Alida Stevens, manager of the centre, said renovation has restored the dignity of the children.

“The children accommodated here now have a sense of belonging.

They feel they have a home and that gives them hope.

“This was a much-needed renovation,” said Stevens.

Renovation work included redesigning the garden, painting the house, fixing furniture and getting essential household items.

Although lack of funding is always a very real challenge, Stevens said they were doing their best to care and provide for the children accommodated at the centre.

Contributions were from the following donors: the Dutch Reformed Church Moedergemeente, San and Piet Venter, the Bank of England, Flamingo Rotary, Plascon Bloemfontein, Builtmat management, Gerhard Nel, Kallie Thierhoff, Giepie Swart of Dulux, 3bricks (Jannie le Roux), Arno Pharmacy Elizabeth street, Dalina Prichchard, Etsie Coetzee and Walter Smit
