BETHLEHEM. - Thabang Msimanga, a caretaker at the New Horizon College in Bethlehem, has shown that he is more than just the hardworking, trustworthy and friendly person people see at school every day.

He is also a rising star in the world of cycling.

Thabang took part in four events during 2015 and showed real talent by achieving wonderful results.

He started his 2015 cycling season with the annual Reitz Bielie Mielie cycling race on 21 February.

He excelled in the rainy conditions and received a silver medal for his overall second place.

Fuelled by the success, he participated in the Emperors Palace Classic road race on 12 April and completed the 102 km in 02:46:22 with an average speed of 36,79km/h.

This outing was not a smooth ride for Thabang as he suffered severe muscle cramping. He nevertheless, finished in a time of 02:52:10 and a speed average of 36,94km/h.

Two weeks later, on 15 November, he was determined to show his mettle.

He made his way to the City of Gold to take on the tough Momentum 94.7 Cycle Challenge where he did excellently.

His time of 02:58:29 and an average speed of 31,94km/h placed him 1 750th out of 16 899 male cyclists, 198th out of 2 128 cyclists in his age group, 3rd out of 558 cyclists in his starting group and 1 961th out of 22 147 total cyclists on the day.

The New Horizon College congratulated Thabang on his achievements.
