The survivor of a horrible accident, Thato Matsietseng, regards himself as extremely lucky to be alive. Matsietseng survived the accident in which two of his friends, Motsamai Kenneth Tau and Thato Mathutha, died days apart. The accident reportedly occurred on 27 September at around 10:30. Mathutha was behind the wheel of a Hyundai which, after stalling on the road due to a technical problem, was being towed by a Toyota sedan. Tau and Mathutha were with him in the Hyundai. The owner of a well-known funeral parlour, Modibedi Maine, was reportedly driving a damaged Toyota Hilux double-cab bakkie. It is alleged that he then crashed into the two vehicles from behind on the N8 near Sanasport. Tau reportedly died on impact, while Mathutha died in the Pelonomi Hospital in Bloemfontein the next day. Matsietseng survived, but broke both his legs. He is undergoing treatment at the Busamed Hospital, a private hospital in Bloemfontein.“I remember sitting next to Tau in the backseat of the Hyundai,” said Matsietseng.“I then woke to ambulance sirens and people around me. I tried to wake Kenneth, but he did not respond. Only later I realised that he had already been dead.” The particulars of the accident are still sketchy. The four occupants of the Toyota sedan all survived with minor injuries. Maine, the driver of the double-cab bakkie, survived the accident. At the time of going to print, no comment was received from the police regarding the accident, or whether or not an investigation into the matter had been launched.
