Acclaimed Fugard play on stage in Bloem

2016-02-24 06:00

THE André Huguenet Theatre will be the place to be from Wednesday, 24 February, to Saturday, 27 February.

The acclaimed play Sizwe Banzi is Dead by Athol Fugard, written collaboratively with two South African actors, John Kani and Winston Ntshona, comes to Bloemfontein. Sizwe Banzi is Dead tells the story of Styles, an intelligent, capable and talented man, who leaves his job as a factory worker to follow his dream of owning a photography studio.

A customer, Sizwe Banzi, has been caught without a passbook and must return to King Williams Town to his poverty-stricken family or take a chance that could force him to abandon his given name and sense of identity.

He is forced to rethink what he believes makes up a man’s identity.

Is being a man measured by what a man is called – his clan name and such – or does it have to do with the role a man plays and the risks he is willing to take for those who depend on him for their survival?

Tickets costs R60 at Pacofs.
