Accused home for Christmas

Murder accused Itumeleng Brian Motati (34), who is suspected of causing the death of his wife by burning her alive, will spend Christmas at home. This is after the murder case against him was postponed to 22 January. He briefly appeared in the Bloemfontein Magistrate’s Court on Friday (01/12).

The murder case was rescheduled to determine a date for transfer to the Regional Court in Bloemfontein.

Attendees in Court 22 were mainly friends and family of the accused and of his late wife, Jeanett Moekoa-Motati (28). Also in attendance was the landlord of the building where the accused and the deceased had stayed with their three children, aged ten, six and two.

Motati is currently out on R500 bail, granted upon his appearance in the Bloemfontein Magistrate’s Court on 17 October. Neo Madlala, the attorney representing the murder accused, said the bail was unconditional. Madlala said no new charges have been added against Motati other than the charges of murder and arson.

The murder charge follows the death of Jeanett, whom Motati allegedly set ablaze alive in the flat the couple had been renting in Phase 3, Bloemfontein.

The accused spent about a month in the Pelonomi Hospital, where he was treated for, among others, burn wounds that he had sustained during the incident on 23 September.

Motati was admitted with his wife, who later succumbed to severe burn wounds incurred during the ordeal. The couple had reportedly had a domestic dispute which led to the incident of her allegedly being burned alive in broad daylight. Motati had allegedly wrapped up Jeanett’s mouth and entire body with plastic, thereafter setting her ablaze in the flat.
