This year’s star matriculants can now enter for the Matriculant of the Year competition in which prizes worth thousands of rands are up for grabs by the winner and the finalists.

Entry forms for this competition, annually held by Volksblad and the University of the Free State (UFS), have already been sent to schools.

Gr. 12 learners who want to study full-time at the UFS in Bloemfontein from next year can be entered by their school, or they can enter themselves.

It is, however, important that the signature of the principal, as well as the school stamp, are on the entry form.

A total of 25 semi-finalists are chosen from all the entries and out of these, 14 finalists will be selected.

During the weekend of 29 September to 1 October, all the top finalists and their parents or guardians must be in Bloemfontein. The top finalists will be subjected to a tough selection process to determine the winner.

The winner’s prizes are an overseas trip for two donated by XL Astra Travel; prize money of R10 000 from the sponsors Kovsie Alumni Trust, KPMG, Absa and Pick n Pay Hypermarket; a R12 000 bursary from the UFS and the weekend and other gifts valued at R6 000.

The 13 runner-up prizes are R10 000 each from the sponsors Kovsie Alumni Trust, KPMG, Absa and Pick n Pay Hypermarket; a bursary of R7 500 from the UFS, and the weekend and other gifts valued at R6 000.

Two special prizes sponsored by the Kovsie Alumni Trust are R5 000 for the best achiever in sport and R5 000 for the best achiever in culture activities.

Each of the 11 semi-finalists receives R3 000 prize money from the Kovsie Alumni Trust and a R3 500 bursary from the UFS.

All bursaries and prize money will be paid directly into the students’ Absa bank accounts as soon as they register at the UFS.

The closing date for the competition is 4 August.

All the information on how to enter the competition is on the entry form. Call Linda Greyling at UFS Marketing on 051-401-3384 (until 13:00) or send an email to
