‘Adoption best for orphans’

2016-06-08 06:00

THE focus is on adoption as the best option for orphaned and abandoned children in the protection of children and their rights.

This is according to the Free State Department of Social Development.

This message formed part of Child Protection Week (29 May to 5 June) and awareness was created at hospitals, clinics, churches and shopping malls.

Eligible families and prospective adoptive parents were encouraged to access adoption services.

“This is due to a high number of orphaned and abandoned children placed in child and youth care centres, which is not in their best interest, as they have the right to a family,” said Makgotso Mosetlhe-Motsemme of the department’s Adoption Services.

This year the theme for Child Protection Week, around which a series of awareness campaigns were hosted, was Let us All Protect Children to Move South Africa Forward.

“Our belief is that it’s everyone’s responsibility to make our community child-friendly by striving to change the world and creating an environment in which gender equality, freedom and social justice are not a dream but a reality.

“It is our responsibility to improve the physical, emotional, intellectual and social development of children and youth; to provide opportunities for children to be assured of a sense of accomplishment, belonging, generosity and feelings of satisfaction to develop self-help skills and independence,” said Tshidiso Molale, project coordinator of the Thusanang Community-Based Organisation in Botshabelo.

According to Molale, the great concern is the increase in crimes against children, such as molestation, sexual abuse, kidnapping and even murder, child slavery and labour, as well as child trafficking.

“Child trafficking and exploitation, as well as substance abuse and other circumstances that perpetuate child vulnerability, is worrying.”
