All is lost for Block

Former Northern Cape ANC chairperson John Block is expected to spend his first Christmas in prison.

This follows the dismissal of his final appeal by the Constitutional Court on Monday (19/11).

Block and his co-accused, Christo Scholtz, who was the chief executive officer (CEO) of Trifecta, were found guilty on charges of corruption and money laundering in 2016, a charge they have been trying to fight against ever since.

Having exhausted their final legal avenue this week, they have up to five days to hand themselves over to Correctional Services. The case relates to leases concluded between the mentioned company and government departments, from which Block received kickbacks in return.

Their second to last attempt to appeal their 15-year jail sentence was dismissed in August, which gave them one final bid to appeal against the state, which also failed.

The ANC in the province vows to continue offering moral support to Block, but opposition parties like Cope and the DA welcome the court outcome and taps itself on the shoulder for being vocal on Block’s dealings in government over the years.
